Birmingham Cathedral (St Philip's)
Overview
Dedicated to St Philip, this Baroque gem, set in the heart of the city, is one of the smallest cathedrals in England. It was built in 1715 as a semi-rural parish church, faced in sandstone to the designs of architect Thomas Archer, and consecrated as a cathedral only in 1905. Locally-born Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones designed four windows, including the glorious ‘Ascension’ window of 1884, with its host of scarlet-clad angels. Notable memorials include one dedicated to victims of the pub bombings in the city.
