Overview
Hexham’s parish church of St Andrew dates to the 12th century, and reflects the Early English style of architecture. Highlights include the Anglo-Saxon crypt, built using Roman-cut stones from nearby Corbridge; the broad stone staircase known as the Night Stair; and the Frith Stool – a lump of sandstone that has served as a bishops’ throne for more than 1,300 years. A weathered cross shaft is connected to the 8th-century St Acca.
