Rievaulx Terrace

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
As if the abbey were not delightful enough on its own, cut into the hillside above the ruined buildings is Rievaulx Terrace – a level, curved grassy promenade. The terrace at Rievaulx was designed in 1758, and is now owned by the National Trust. It offers strollers tantalising glimpses of the abbey between the trees below, with fantastic views of the Rye Valley and Hambleton Hills. There are two Grecian-style temple follies to walk between, one apparently built for the use of hunting parties, the other for quiet contemplation.
