RSPB Wolves Wood
Overview
This reserve is one of the few remnants of the ancient woodland that used to cover East Anglia. The RSPB manages it using the traditional method of coppicing (a special way of cutting the trees to let light in), which means that the wood has a wide variety of birds, plants and mammals. Visit early on a fine spring morning to hear the chorus of up to 20 species of bird, including the rich, musical song of the nightingale. It is strongly advised that visitors wear wellington boots as the woods can be muddy.
About the area
Suffolk is Constable country, where the county’s crumbling, time-ravaged coastline spreads itself under wide skies to convey a wonderful sense of remoteness and solitude. Highly evocative and atmospheric, this is where rivers wind lazily to the sea and notorious 18th-century smugglers hid from the excise men.
