Renishaw Hall & GardensQuality Assessed
"The guided tour of the house is a highly memorable part of the visit."
Overview
Renishaw Hall and Gardens offers something for everyone including guided tours, gardens, woodland and lake walks, children's play area, a vineyard (selling their own wine), museum, cafe and shops as well as a programme of special events throughout the year. The hall's current owner is Alexandra Sitwell, part of the renowned literary family that included poet Edith Sitwell (the family have lived at Renishaw for nearly 400 years). The historic gardens, designed in the Italian style, were laid out over 100 years ago and include formal gardens, woodland, lakes and a classical temple. Renishaw also boasts one of the mostly northerly vineyards in Britain. Renishaw Hall can be viewed by guided tour only, as it is still a lived-in family home. The tours explore the entire ground floor and last about an hour. It’s also possible to visit the Sitwell Museum where you will learn more about the family that has owned the Hall for four centuries. Discover the famous literary trio of Osbert, Edith and Sacheverell Sitwell, and see some of their books and letters, before having lunch in the licensed Renishaw Hall Café.
About the area
The natural features of this central English county range from the modest heights of the Peak District National Park, where Kinder Scout stands at 2,088 ft (636 m), to the depths of its remarkable underground caverns, floodlit to reveal exquisite Blue John stone. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the High Peak Trail which extends from the Derwent Valley to the limestone plateau near Buxton, and for many, the spectacular scenery is what draws them to the area.
