Abbey Pumping Station MuseumQuality Assessed
"A must for enthusiasts of industrial history and heavy machinery."
Overview
The first thing you'll see is the 150-foot tall chimney that towers over Leicester’s fine Victorian pumping station. The solution to the city's sewage problems were the four magnificent beam engines that reside here, all restored to full working glory. As well as the engines there are exhibits on the history of science, industry, transport, health and hygiene. Add to that a collection of vintage vehicles, and a narrow-gauge railway, and what else could you ask for? A sensory garden? Oh, there's one of those too.
About the area
Leicestershire is divided between the large country estates of its eastern side and the industrial towns of the East Midlands to its west. Coal mining was an important part of the county’s industrial development in the 19th and 20th centuries.
