Roots York
"Innovative local food by the River Ouse."
Overview
Driven by the same farm-to-table ethos as its sister restaurant, The Black Swan at Oldstead, Roots York occupies a 19th-century Arts and Crafts building on Marygate in the city’s historic heart. Lit by leaded windows, the room is classy with its oak panelling and distinctive tables with root-shaped bases. Tommy Banks's family farm supplies much of the produce for its ‘Core’ and ‘Signature’ tasting menus and the simple dish descriptions belie the creativity and detail behind them, as seen in a starter of spruce-glazed Hebridean scallop with celeriac and brown butter hollandaise. Flavour is everything in a dish of barbecued venison and bone marrow balanced with sweet and sour beetroot and cherry.
There’s an excellent wine list with pairings for both menus.
