Melton's Restaurant
"Top-notch cooking in locals’ favourite."
Overview
For the best part of four decades, Melton’s Restaurant has remained one of York’s notable restaurants. Opened by chef Michael Hjort and wife Lucy in 1990, this welcoming bistro-style venue is close to a local shopping area on the outskirts of the cathedral city. The hand-painted wall friezes, depicting local landmarks, contrast beautifully with the lilac and rich purple decor of this intimate, eight-table restaurant. Friendly and informal staff have a low-key style, but they are knowledgeable and passionate about the dishes.
Generous and refined, the modern British menu changes seasonally although a few time-honoured staples stay on the menu to keep the regulars satisfied. A starter of stuffed morel is served with confit chicken, white asparagus and wild garlic. Alternatively, a meal might begin with asparagus tartlet, parmesan, alliums and cured egg yolk. Regional ingredients get regular star billing on the menu, with Yorkshire lamb making an appearance in a well-considered and perfectly balanced main course with little gem, alliums and Madeira. Or, perhaps, a piece of super fresh North Sea cod with white asparagus, Jersey Royal potatoes and smoked pike roe will float your boat. When it comes to dessert, an immaculate and well risen prune and brandy soufflé is paired with brown butter and miso ice cream, or maybe the Huila 70% chocolate with salted caramel, burnt citrus and hogweed will tempt you at the final hurdle. For a savoury end to the meal, there’s a selection of British cheese with biscuits, chutney and Yorkshire tea loaf. An interesting list of wines, carefully curated by the owners, offers over 150 different bins from around the world, including more eclectic wine producing locations such as eastern Europe, Japan and Yorkshire itself. The list also includes plenty by the glass and half-bottle, and a growing number of orange wines.
