Overview
Close to the National Trust’s Sutton Hoo, Rendlesham Forest and the lovely medieval town of Woodbridge, The Unruly Pig is a 16th-century Suffolk inn. The style is a pleasing mixture of traditional and contemporary, with original oak beams, sloping ceilings, log-burners and an eclectic mix of pop and local art on the walls. In the cosy bar you’ll find Adnams and award-winning ales, while in the wood-panelled dining rooms the monthly-changing ‘Britalian’ menus offer a good choice – head chef Dave Wall cooked at a number of well-known restaurants before arriving at the Pig, and he’s keen to make the most of the great local produce. Starters from the à la carte menu might feature raviolo of quail with tarragon and beetroot; or seared octopus with spicy sausage purée, apple and fennel. Mains range from the Unruly Burger in a Pump Street brioche bun, with Roquefort mayonnaise, dripping chips and onion rings, to hand-rolled farfalle pasta with mussels, cuttlefish, garlic, tomato and parsley. There is also a daily set menu as well as kids', vegetarian, dairy-free and gluten-free menus. On Sundays you might begin with a couple of crispy oysters, or arancini with ‘nduja, chorizo and taleggio before getting stuck in to roast rack of pork or rib of beef with all the trimmings.

About the area
Suffolk is Constable country, where the county’s crumbling, time-ravaged coastline spreads itself under wide skies to convey a wonderful sense of remoteness and solitude. Highly evocative and atmospheric, this is where rivers wind lazily to the sea and notorious 18th-century smugglers hid from the excise men.
