Next Door
"Modern dining in a neighbourhood favourite."
Overview
On Main Street in the heart of Frodsham, the desirable commuter village between Chester and Manchester, Next Door occupies a timbered cottage that was once a butcher’s shop. The restaurant’s unusual name comes from the time when husband and wife team Richard and Vikki Nuttall (he’s in the kitchen, she’s the sommelier) lived in the adjoining house. With its oak beams and exposed stone walls, it’s a cosy spot with a homely feel. The tiled floor, teal paintwork and vibrant artwork provide plenty of modern flourishes, as does the partially open kitchen at the rear of the dining room.
The passion for providing good food and excellent hospitality is very much evident from the knowledgeable young staff. The modern British menus change with the seasons, and local sourcing extends to herbs grown in the small back garden. The owner is clearly a passionate chef, not only about his cooking, but also about his supply chain of trusted local growers and producers. A meal here might begin with Hob Hey Wood wild garlic, Warburton’s Cheshire potato, young leek and black garlic, or perhaps smoked loin of Herdwick lamb, salsify, smoked whey and English grains. Move on with Kames Bay trout, young fennel, shellfish and cucumber, that’s if the loin of wild Cheshire venison, hispi cabbage, verjus and cultured butter doesn’t catch your eye first. For vegetarians, summer courgette tarte fine, hen’s yolk and preserved mushroom is a delightful main course option. The high level of skill and finely tuned invention continues through to the desserts with white chocolate mousse, Lancashire strawberry, crème crue and almond, or Cox and Granny Smith apple, sponge, gooseberry and ginger. For a savoury finale, there’s a selection of artisan cheese served with Eccles cake, chutney and crackers. The concise wine list is interesting and exceptionally well chosen.
