Duffield Castle (NT)

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
In 1266 King Henry III destroyed one of England’s largest medieval castles. Today, all that remains of Duffield Castle are the foundations, the view and its stories. The tiny, one hectare site, nestled in the village of Duffield, is now bounded on all sides by housing and roads, but it is still a place to soak up the history. The National Trust is planning an archaeological dig to better understand what the original footprint of the castle would have been. The stones that are currently above ground were placed there by Victorian antiquarians, when the castle was rediscovered in 1886, and they missed key parts of the castle. There have also been improvements to the steps leading up the steep entrance slope.
Location
Milford Road, DUFFIELD, DE56 4DW
About the area
The natural features of this central English county range from the modest heights of the Peak District National Park, where Kinder Scout stands at 2,088 ft (636 m), to the depths of its remarkable underground caverns, floodlit to reveal exquisite Blue John stone. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the High Peak Trail which extends from the Derwent Valley to the limestone plateau near Buxton, and for many, the spectacular scenery is what draws them to the area.
