Holst Birthplace Museum

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
One of Cheltenham’s famous sons is the composer Gustav Holst, best known for 'The Planets'. Holst was born in Cheltenham in 1874. The house in Clarence Road where he grew up is now a museum dedicated, in part, to the life of the composer, and in part to an evocation of life in the Regency and Victorian town. There’s a Gustav Holst Way medium-distance trail in the north Cotswolds too, which calls in at places relevant to his life.

About the area
Gloucestershire is home to a variety of landscapes, including the Cotswolds, a region of gentle hills, valleys and gem-like villages that roll through the county. To their west is the Severn Plain, watered by Britain’s longest river and characterised by orchards and farms marked out by hedgerows that blaze with mayflower in the spring; beyond the Severn are the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.
