Sandham Memorial Chapel

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
This redbrick chapel was purpose-built in the 1920s for the artist Stanley Spencer to fill with paintings inspired by his experiences in WWI. Influenced by Giotto's Arena Chapel in Padua, Spencer took five years to complete what is arguably his finest achievement. The chapel is set amongst lawns and orchards with views over Watership Down. There is no internal lighting, so it's best to visit on a bright day. The architect Lionel Pearson of Adams, Holden and Pearson was also involved in the design of the Royal Artillery Memorial in London.
