Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet
Overview
Catch a glimpse of life at home and at work at this rural scythe and steelworks. Abbeydale Works was once a producer of agricultural tools, and the largest water-powered industrial site on the River Sheaf. It is now a group of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, where you can see workers' houses, working waterwheels, workshops, tilt hammers, a grinding hull and the last complete crucible steel furnace surviving in the UK. Thanks to a recent infusion of Lottery money, Abbeydale now has a new learning centre, gallery and hands-on displays.

About the area
Traditionally a steel and coal producing centre, the decline of both industries in South Yorkshire has been replaced to some extent by tourism based around the area’s beautiful Pennine countryside. The county claims part of the Peak District National Park, whose hills and dales provide welcome space for the large urban populations.
