Overview
With its massive sails silhouetted against the sky and its brilliant white round house that revolves on its base, you will adore the post corn windmill at Saxtead Green – it will bring a smile to your face the moment you set eyes on it. It dates from the late 1790s and is still in working order. You can climb the wooden stairs of this three-storey mill; each floor is full of fascinating machinery, such as millstones and the massive oak brake wheel. At the top you can see the windshaft, on which the sails and their fantail are fixed. The mill is classed as an Ancient Monument and is cared for by English Heritage. An audio tour explains the workings of the mill.

About the area
Suffolk is Constable country, where the county’s crumbling, time-ravaged coastline spreads itself under wide skies to convey a wonderful sense of remoteness and solitude. Highly evocative and atmospheric, this is where rivers wind lazily to the sea and notorious 18th-century smugglers hid from the excise men.
