Hartshill Hayes and the country park
From the car park, enter the Hartshill Hayes Country Park at the back of the visitor centre. Pass the children’s play area and take the path that arcs left (northwest) along the top of Hartshill, alongside a covered reservoir, and enjoy the super view over the surrounding area. Continue ahead on the path that then descends right into woodland. At the bottom of the woodland go over the two footbridges and then bear left to walk along a fine open path as you continue, initially to the left of the hedge, then to its right. In about 0.25 miles (400m) the path bends to the right and you will ascend northeast to the brow of the hill, from where you can overlook the Coventry Canal and get a great view. Bear left beside a kissing gate onto the path, which becomes hedged as you progress northwards towards Quarry Farm. Go through the gate to the left of the farm buildings onto Quarry Lane.
Turn right and stroll down the lane, bearing right at the junction until you come to bridge No. 36 over the Coventry Canal. Cross either bridge and descend right to the tow path. Go right under the bridge to walk in a northwesterly direction, and in 0.5 miles (800m) proceed beneath bridge No. 37.
Leave the tow path at bridge No. 38 and cross the canal onto a quiet lane. Walk up the lane for about 150yds (137m) then, just before a private house, go left through a tall kissing gate into meadowland and on into pastureland. Cross over the footbridge at the bottom of the field, then walk half right across the next field and on to a gate. This leads to a footbridge and a second tall kissing gate, and you enter the woodland of Purley Park. Follow the footpath up the right edge of the woodland. The path arcs left into the trees and you will exit on to Quarry Lane again.
Go right and head up the lane, past the entrance to Mancetter Quarry. Continue along the lane and in a further 600yds (549m), just past Oldbury Farm, go lef
Walk to the right of the farm buildings, with gardens on your right, to reach a good bridlepath beside ponds going southeast. This lovely path crosses farm land, but soon you will be following yellow-topped marker posts across a golf course.
Exit onto a road, via a gate, and then go left. The road passes by Oldbury Grange and Oldbury Grange Gardens. Where there is a sharp right-hand bend in the road, go left up towards the rear entrance to the gardens and enter Hartshill Hayes Country Park via two gates. Once you are in the park bear right and join the waymarked park path that takes you back to the visitor centre.
