"Historic pub majoring on local produce"
Overview
This lovely pub is more peaceful today than it was in 1745, when the retreating army of ‘Bonnie’ Prince Charlie was defeated in the nearby village of Clifton. The pub is set on the historic Lowther Estate near Ullswater, where a ruined castle-mansion is set at the heart of pasture, woodland and fells alongside the rushing River Lowther and pretty village of Askham. Meticulously renovated by owner Charles Lowther, this is a traditional inn with contemporary comforts, and the appealing menu majors on the bountiful produce of the estate. Beef is from pedigree Shorthorns; pork from home-reared rare breed stock; while game and most fish is local. Settle in with a pint of Hawkshead Bitter and secure a starter of Estate venison pie with a fruit chutney followed by Rough Fell lamb and cockle suet pudding, spring onion mash, braised leek and lamb sauce; or ricotta and sage dumplings, roast squash and crispy kale. Sharing plates, salads, sandwiches and burgers all vie for space on the menu. There is a secluded courtyard and garden.

About the area
Cumbria's rugged yet beautiful landscape is best known for the Lake District National Park that sits within its boundaries. It’s famous for Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, and Derwent Water, ‘Queen of the English Lakes', but other lesser-known areas in the south, such as the Lune Valley and the coastal towns, are secret gems of wide cobbled streets and rolling hills.
