Conisbrough Castle
Overview
To the west of the town is this spectacular ruined castle, famously the inspiration for Sir Walter Scott’s classic novel Ivanhoe (1820). Its magnesian limestone keep stands up to 97 feet high, a fine remnant of medieval architecture. The roof has been restored, and a new visitor centre opened in 2014.

About the area
Traditionally a steel and coal producing centre, the decline of both industries in South Yorkshire has been replaced to some extent by tourism based around the area’s beautiful Pennine countryside. The county claims part of the Peak District National Park, whose hills and dales provide welcome space for the large urban populations.
