A circuit of Selkirk
From Mungo Park's statue, walk to the Market Place, go right down Ettrick Terrace, left at the church, and then immediately sharp right down Forest Road. Follow this downhill to Mill Street, and go right then left onto Muthag Street, which soon becomes Buccleuch Road. Turn right, following the signs for the riverside walk, and walk across Victoria Park to join a surfaced track.
Turn left to walk by the river, then join the road and turn right to cross the bridge. Walk straight on, with a rugby ground on your left, until you reach the Long Philip Burn and the A708. Cross over and walk beside the burn to the main road junction. Cross over, turn left, then almost immediately take the first right onto Corbylinn Road. Bear left and uphill as the road curves briefly away from the burn, passing through a strip of woodland.
You’ll soon reach a bridge across the burn and an unsurfaced car park on the opposite side of the road. Don’t cross the bridge, but turn left here and follow the obvious dirt track through the woods.
Turn left at the next patch of woods and follow a path waymarked by yellow arrows for a short distance, then veer left to cross a field. Soon after passing a white cottage on your right, pass through a narrow strip of woodland, then turn left and follow the path as it curves gently downhill through woods, with fields on your left. You’ll soon pass a driveway on your right which leads to Philiphaugh. Carry straight on downhill to reach the A708 again.
Cross over (carefully) to the new wooden buildings of the Waterwheel Restaurant, with a car park on the left. Just after it, take a small bridge across the narrow mill lade, beside a recently restored waterwheel.
Turn right to reach the foaming water of Murray’s Cauld on your left and the white, pebble-dashed Salmon Viewing Centre, then retrace your steps to walk along the well surfaced path on the south side of the mill lade.
Where the path splits, take the track on the left and follow a straight concrete path beside the lade to reach the site of a former mill (now being converted into housing). Keeping this on your right, carry on to the end of Ettrickhaugh Road and walk back to the Selkirk bridge.
Don’t cross the bridge but join the footpath on the left. Follow this footpath as it goes past a sports ground, then skirts a housing estate. Continue walking until you reach the pedestrian footbridge on your right-hand side. Cross over the river here, bear right and retrace your steps back over Victoria Park and uphill to return to the Market Place.
