Peover Hall
Overview
Built by Sir Randle Mainwaring in 1585, Peover Hall was extended in the 1760s, and much later, used as a HQ for General Patton's Third Army who were in training for the D-Day Landings in 1944. By the time the then-owners - the Brooks family - returned in 1950 the place was in a terrible state, partly thanks to a fire caused by a careless GI. A major restoration programme was undertaken, and this splendid house is the result. Oak panelling, a long gallery and many antiques and other items make for a fascinating visit, and the gardens are home to a 500-year old oak and an avenue of pleached lime trees.
