Townend
Overview
The house is one of the finest examples of a 'statesman' (wealthy yeoman) farmer's house in Cumbria, built in 1650 for George Browne, whose descendants lived here until 1943. Inside is the original home-made carved furniture, with domestic utensils, letters and papers of the farm and a unique library spanning four centuries which was used by the Browne family. About the area
Cumbria's rugged yet beautiful landscape is best known for the Lake District National Park that sits within its boundaries. It’s famous for Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, and Derwent Water, ‘Queen of the English Lakes', but other lesser-known areas in the south, such as the Lune Valley and the coastal towns, are secret gems of wide cobbled streets and rolling hills.
