Buxton Museum and Art Gallery
Overview
An excellent local museum and art gallery, featuring the Wonders of the Peak gallery - a journey through time and place. You time-travel to return to the days when there were sharks, hippos and rhinoceros, bears and hyenas roaming what is now the Peak District. As well as discovering the geology, archaeology and history of the Peak and admiring the museum’s fine collection of Ashford black marble and Blue John ornaments, you can see the recreated study of the Victorian antiquarian W Boyd Dawkins. The Museum also hosts a variety of exhibitions of art, craft, photography and local history throughout the year, and has a busy programme of events and workshops. The shop stocks fascinating fossils, colourful minerals and gifts made from decorative stones. NB The museum is closed for redevelopment until May 2017.

About the area
The natural features of this central English county range from the modest heights of the Peak District National Park, where Kinder Scout stands at 2,088 ft (636 m), to the depths of its remarkable underground caverns, floodlit to reveal exquisite Blue John stone. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the High Peak Trail which extends from the Derwent Valley to the limestone plateau near Buxton, and for many, the spectacular scenery is what draws them to the area.
