Cathedral Church of St Barnabas

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Architect A N W Pugin was commissioned to build this Roman Catholic cathedral, partly modelled on Croxton Abbey in Staffordshire, and it was completed in 1844. The highlight is Pugin’s lavish Blessed Sacrament Chapel, constructed in Decorated Gothic style, painted in rich colours and with a gilded altarpiece (restored in 1933). The rest of the church is much more restrained, reflecting changes in taste and some remodelling in the 1960s.

About the area
Most people associate Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands with the legend of Robin Hood, though the former royal hunting ground of Sherwood Forest has been somewhat tamed since Robin’s outlaw days. Traditionally, the county’s primary industry, alongside agriculture, was coal mining but it is also an oil producing area, and during World War II produced the only oil out of reach of the German U-Boats.
