Wymondham Abbey
Overview
Wymondham Abbey is a 12th-century parish church, the magnificent remnant of a Benedictine priory that was founded in 1107 by William D’Aubigny and disbanded at the Dissolution. Before that, monks and parishioners had fought for control, leading to the intercession of the Archbishop of Canterbury on behalf of the king, Henry IV. The church, dedicated to St Thomas a Becket, had a chequered history as its fortunes waned and waxed again, and in 1902 major restoration was begun. A highlight from this period is the three-tiered, gilded neo-Gothic altar screen, designed by Ninian Comper. It was dedicated to the fallen of World War I on its completion in 1934. In 2015 new rooms and exhibitions opened, bringing the story of the church and its people to life.

The North Norfolk Coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and probably the finest of its kind in Europe.
